W. A. Mozart "Exsultate, Jubilate"

W. A. Mozart "Exsultate, Jubilate"

The famous "Exsultate, Jubilate" KV 165 is a motet, written in January 1773. Mozart was just 17 years old and he had entered the services of the Archbishop of Salzburg. Mozart discovered the castrato Venanzio Rauzzini during his third journey through Italy when Rauzzini was singing the title role in his opera "Lucio Silla" which was being staged in Milan. Admiring the technical excellence of this singer, Mozart then wrote "Exsultate" for him and it was first performed at the Theatine Church on January 17th. Since the disparition of castrati, the motet has always been given to soprani, including Andreas Jaeggi's singing teacher, Frau Prof. Maria Stader.

At the Chapel of Bosmelet, this motet will be sung in the exceptional version for tenor.

On the same program: the Overture of the opera "La Finta Giardiniera" by W. A. Mozart, as well as the Second Cello Concerto by Joseph Haydn.

W. A. Mozart "Exsultate, Jubilate"

Andreas Jaeggi has paticipated in this year's international ice skating competition for adults held in Oberstdorf (Germany). This annual event is organized by the ISU International Skating Union. He received a First Place ranking for each of his two different original programs. Both programs were choreographed and rehearsed by his coaches Katharina Brunner and Richard Furrer.

When handing over the two trophies, the main judge mumbled: "You ARE weird, you know that?!"

Notable is the exalting presence of two characters of comedy: the inn keeper Pontius Pilate (!) in a very lively and clownesque rendition by Andreas Jaeggi and the sexy Dorella of the soprano Hanne Roos, a fiery redhead with her curves enhanced in a tight pink rhinestone gown.
By Suzanne Gervais for "La Lettre du musicien"

The other buffo part, Pontius Pilate (Andreas Jaeggi, touching), who ends up loosing his head, announces the later Wagner roles of Mime and Beckmesser.
By Gérard Condé for "L'Avant-scène"

The cast is most honorably completed by ... Andreas Jaeggi (Pontius Pilate, with very wagnerian accents, the employee of the inn who mutates into Claudio's prison ward), ...
By Damien Dutilleul for "Olyrix"

Andreas Jaeggi gives a very lively rendition of an amusing Pontius Pilate.
By Erna Metdepenninghen for "Crescendo"

They all embrace Mariame Clément's concept and stage directions with ease, they all engage vocally in their roles with assurance and competence. From ... to Andreas Jaeggi's perfectly wacky Pontius Pilate.
By Michel Thomé for "ResMusica"

Andreas Jaeggi, priceless as Pontius Pilate ...
By Laurent Barthel for "ConcertoNet"

The National Opera of the Rhine has carefully chosen its cast ... Used to perform roles "high in color", Andreas Jaeggi is an enjoyable Pontius Pilate "collaborator".
By Laurent Bury for "Forum Opéra"

Andreas Jaeggi, Ponce Pilate impayable...

Andreas Jaeggi sang the role of Pontius Pilate (please note the biblical reference!) in Richard Wagner's very rarely performed early opera. This one and only comical work of the Bayreuth Master had never ever been produced in France. It is a gigantic operatic ham in the manner of Meyerbeer, his arch rival, sprinkled with some Italianizing sparkling Rossini-esque moments.

It Was Worth The Trip ...

... to go to Oberstdorf (Germany) to the only worldwide competition organized by the ISU International Skating Union for adult ice skaters. More than 400 skaters, all over the age of 28, from 25 countries participated in this year's 11th ISU International Adult Figure Skating Competition 2015. Accompanied by his coach Katharina Brunner, Andreas Jaeggi from the Olten Ice Club (Switzerland) took First Place Gold in the category "Bronze Men IV+V Free Skating". His program "Le Tango" was based on an original choreography by Andrea Barnova (now working at the German Ice Center in Chemnitz) which was further developed and fine-tuned to achieve more competition points by his trainers Katharina Brunner and Richard Furrer. Andreas Jaeggi skated against competitors from Australia, Canada, Italy and Poland.

Figure Skating

When seen from the outside, my daily vocal exercises at the piano as well as my equally demanding mandatory fitness program, consisting of regular ice skating training, may not seem excessively exciting. This is not so. To say it in the words of my former voice teacher, the sublime Mozart singer Frau Prof. Maria Stader: "You must sing a scale with soul. If you can do that, you will not need to 'do' anything extra. The music will come towards you all by itself." This also means that no "exercise" should ever be just routine. "Doing exercises" means you execute a piece of music which consists of only a few musical and vocal elements (scales, interval jumps, long held notes, etc.) instead of a complex text put into a rhythmically structured melodic line (as in a song or an aria). And then you exercise. And repeat the exercise. And repeat it over and over again. With each repetition, one constantly searches to find new insight, seeks out nuance, attempts to discover the soul within one's self and ultimately strives to achieve that allusive thing called perfection. This process equally applies to my figure skating.

I have worked on the ice with Andrea Barnova and Petr Barna. Currently, my coaches are Katharina Brunner and Richard Furrer. With their help and guidance I have passed both the Inter-Silver Style Test and Inter-Bronze Test (which includes jumps & spins). I have also successfully completed the official "Youth+Sports" Swiss Basic Ice Skating Coach Training Camp in Champery VS (Switzerland).

Finally, I am "rewarded" for the long and arduous hours of preparation time with stage performances and concerts before a live audience, or – as you can see in these photos – my participation at numerous figure skating competitions: the Deutschland-Pokal in Leipzig and the Adult ISU Competition in Oberstdorf (both in Germany), followed by the Tenini-Graf-Cup in Wetzikon/Zurich, the Swiss Ice Trophy in Baeretswil/Zurich, the Glattal-Cup in Duebendorf/Zurich, the Saentis-Cup in Herisau and the Basel Championship (all in Switzerland). Although stage fright which increases with age turns this "reward" into a rather exhausting gift ...

Eiskunstlaufen

Reviews for Andreas Jaeggi as Mime in
Richard Wagner's "Das Rheingold" with the Symphony Orchestra Biel Solothurn

at the Kongresshaus Biel/Bienne (Switzerland), (General Manager: Dieter Kaegi), Conductor: Hans Urbanek (Assistant: Ann Beckman), Stage Director: Andreas Rosar, Video: Sonja Horisberger, with Tanja Ariane Baumgartner, Marion Ammann, Jordanka Milkova, Vitalij Kowaljow, Arnold Bezuyen, Jo Pohlheim, Andreas Jaeggi, Martin Snell, John Uhlenhopp, Christine Buffle, Susannah Haberfeld & Robin Adams

Andreas Jaeggi offered up for the role of Mime his forceful steel like tenor voice in a playful but precise characterization, both actingwise and vocally.
By Marcello Paolino for "Der neue Merker"

Alberich's brother Mime was humourously portrayed by Andreas Jaeggi in a cunning, underhanded and slimy way, covering his part perfectly actingwise as well as having impeccable transitions between full singing voice and Sprechgesang (speech-song).
By G. Schunk for "Das Opernglas"

Jo Pohlheim (Alberich) and Andreas Jaeggi (Mime) gave us a pair of Nibelungen brothers of high standard.
By Peter Koenig for "Der Bund"

Reviews for Andreas Jaeggi as Skouratov in Leos Janacek's "From the House of the Dead" at the Opera National du Rhin / Opera d'Europe in Strasbourg & Mulhouse, France: Conducted by Marko Letonja (assisted by Sarah Danielle & Irene-Cordelia Huberti), Set & Costumes by Miruna & Radu Boruzescu, Staged by Robert Carsen (assisted by Maria Lamont).

In this opera without any main roles, where the prisonners' stories succeed each other on a practically equal level, one will take note of the beautiful clearness of enunciation as well as of the highly individualized voice timbres, especially in Andreas Jaeggi's Skuratov.
By Yannick Million for "altamusica.com"

The dramatic engagement and the scenic believability of the vast cast are flawless: Nicolas Cavallier lending nobility and humanity to Goriantshikov, the tenderness of Andreas Jaeggi's Skuratov, who is still completely obsessed with his Louisa, the vibrant and juvenile Aljeja of Pascal Charbonneau, Peter Straka's Filka/Luka cutting like the blade of a knife, Martin Barta's halluzinating Shishkov, whose recount of Akoulina's murder equals the master strory-telling of a best-selling thriller.
By Marie-Aude Roux for "Le Monde"

... we find the Canadian tenor Pascal Charbonneau a luminous Aljeja, a real life force within the intrigue, whereas the tenor Andreas Jaeggi enthralls in Skuratov's narrative.
By Eric Loret for "Liberation"

The chorus is somewhat prudent, but the cast of soloists homogeneous, from whence emerge the impressive Martin Barta, the very dignified Nicolas Cavallier, the intense Andreas Jaeggi and the touching Pascal Charbonneau.
By Christian Merlin for "Le Figaro"

Andreas Jaeggi who is (like Peter Straka) also familiar with Janacek's work, has portrayed the character of Skuratov with a lot of intensity.
By Pierre Benveniste for "OBD-Opera"

Remarkable are: Nicolas Cavallier's measured nobility as Goryanchikov, the incisive Pascal Charbonneau in the small role of Alieja, and Andreas Jaeggi (Skuratov) as well as Guy de Mey (Shapkin) in their exuberant recounts of their respective crimes.
By Stefano Nardelli for "Giornale della Musica"

Note the immutable dignity of Nicolas Cavallier as Goryantchikov, the expressivity of Peter Straka as Filka Morosov, who doesn't hesitate to distort his voice for higher dramatic impact, the tenderness of Andreas Jaeggi's Skuratov when he evokes his Louisa, ...
By Michel Thomé for "ResMusica"

Nicolas Cavallier holds his distance with class, a man being brutally thrown into the plebeian muddy world of prisonners. Martin Barta (poignant Chichkov), Remy Corazza (dignified Old Prisonner), Andreas Jaeggi (compassionate Skouratov), Pascal Charbonneau (fragile Aljeja), Guy de Mey (illuminated Chapkine), Gijs van der Linden (Kedril), and their comrades, they all contribute to make this vertiginous descent into the hell of mankind homogenous, and at the same time full of relief.
By Caroline Alexander for "Webthea.com"

Janacek's piece of musical theatre is based on Fyodor Dostojevsky's notes of the same name. This literary masterpiece was created in the year 1861. It portrays the inner life of a prison, a subject which has been persistently revisited throughout history and remains a constantly recurring comtemporary theme.

Janacek's translation of this text into music was brought to the stage post mortem: the world creation took place in Brno, Czech Republic in 1930. The composer had died two years previously, having almost finished the third act of this opera.

"Big Opera" is also always "Big Drama": Skuratov, a convicted murderer, relays to the listener in an impressive musical monologue the tale of his disasterous love story, which has led him to become a criminal. The performances will not be boring!

Echos from Venezia
Reviews for Andreas Jaeggi as the Count Hauk-Sendorf in Leos Janacek's "Vec Makropulos" at the Gran Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Italy: Conducted by Gabriele Ferro (assisted by Joyce Fieldsend), Set & Costumes by Miruna & Radu Boruzescu, Staged by Robert Carsen (assisted by Laurie Feldman).

Andreas Jaeggi offers us a priceless interpretation of the Count, being as agedly ripe in his delightful caricature as he is juvenile in his vocal clarity.
Andreas Jaeggi gibt einen unbezahlbaren Grafen, ebenso greisenhaft in seiner ergoetzlichen Karikatur wie jugendlich in seinem klaren Stimmklang.

"GBOpera" opera magazine
In the role of Hauk-Sendorf, Andreas Jaeggi has excellently interpreted the ancient languishing laughingstock figure, especially in the third act where he sinks into a love delirium for the protagonist.

Exceptional was the performance of Andreas Jaeggi who lends voice and volume to Count Hauk-Sendorf, truly grotesque, but at the same time tragic in his crazy delirium.

The best was the grotesque caricature of Count Hauk-Sendorf by Andreas Jaeggi.

In my opinion, the "bravissimo" Andreas Jaeggi merits special praise. Through hiding - in an infectious way - vocally and as an actor behind the role of Count Hauk-Sendorf, he succeeds in expressing Leos Janacek's - or even better - a general philosophy of life as the composer has portrayed it in the opera.

obituary for venice

old gold and cracked red
defoliates from your walls.
the smell of mildew slumbers
within your decayed bones.
breaths of late summer fog
pervade your carcass.
beloved cadaver
made up for the last journey
you sink ailing
towards the sea-blue distance.
movement, lust have escaped from you.
ignoble ancient lady
hollowed out and eaten up by worms
you slip away from life.
remain reminiscences.

I have written this horrendously kitschy poem about Venice as a teenage boy, without actually knowing the city. It goes quite well with the rhinestone-jewelled carnival masks which you can find in the window display of every second shop in town.

nachruf auf venedig

altgold und rissiges rot
entblaettern dein gebaelk.
in deinen morschen knochen
schlummert modergeruch.
spaetsommerlicher nebelhauch
durchzieht dein gerippe.
geliebter kadaver
geschminkt zur letzten fahrt sinkst du siechend
der meerblauen ferne entgegen.
der bewegung, der lust entronnen.
unwuerdig greise dame
ausgehoelt und von wuermern zerfressen
du entgleitest dem leben.
bleibt erinnerung.

Venetian Minks

A little breeze of cool air and ...
hoppla, out they come again!
The kind of minute detail
illustrating
we live
centuries apart.
Cascading grey locks,
coiffed to the hilt,
caressed by fake nails,
curl down into the fur
of the assassinated beasts.
I myself have one in my wardrobe.
It will stay there.

Les Visons de Venise

Un petit coup de froid et...
hopplà, les voilà ressortis !
Ce sont ces menus détails
qui nous illustrent
que nous vivons
dans des siècles à part.
La chevelure grise tombante,
tirée à quatre épingles,
la coiffure soignée à mort,
carressée par des fausses ongles,
se confond avec les poiles
des bestioles assassinées.
J'en ai un dans mon armoire,
moi aussi. Il y restera.

Discover the Voice
A series of recitals is offered to school classes to give children and teenagers a chance to become familiar with the singing voice. The programs are developed in collaboration with the performers and designed for special age groups. The students can then discover the singing voice within the intimate framework of the Studio Bastille concert hall. Sylvain Audinovski guides their listening by presenting the singers and the musical pieces. At the end of each program, the young audience has the possibility to pose questions directly to the artists.

"The daily life of a classical opera and concert singer is much less extravagant than you might imagine. I am not a star, I am a professional, and the work of a singer demands extreme discipline. Each day, without exception, requires extensive vocal training which consists of breathing and pronounciation exercises, text and music memorisation, singing scales accompanied by the piano for pitch control and, of course, the process of learning new roles. I also do daily whole body physical training: actually, singing itself is a muscular activity which is easily compareable to Olympic sport.
These arduous efforts, combined with the regularity in my work, have permitted me to surpass my wildest dreams: to sing an extremely varied repertoire in numerous big European cities, to participate in over twenty productions at the National Opera of Paris, to perform at the Herod Atticus Theatre, at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens, in front of 6000 spectators, without a microphone and under an open sky ...
For over thirty years, traversing the musical repertory from Chr. W. Gluck to Edith Piaf, I have followed my path of life as a singer." AJ

» AJ

Andreas Jaeggi as The Hunter Mister W / als der Jaeger Mister W
Photo: Leandre Seraidaris

The Hunter Mister W, whose sole obessive purpose is to exterminate all dreams, represents a variation on a consumer protection model which tries doggedly to annihilate all transendence (any resemblance with another sadly famous W would be purely coincidental). With a shotgun replacing his virility, he stands for the holding onto of a principle reality which has been transformed into a repressive obsession.

There are few experiences as magical as being present at the world premiere of a lyrical work. Operas are not being written every day and if this creation takes place on the shores of Lake Geneva, the beauty of the surrounding landscape before entering the theatre gives the event an exceptional character. Furthermore: the firm impression of witnessing the birth of a masterpiece, which you would love to immediately hear again in order to be able to memorize the musical themes, makes one feel really privileged. You then imagine yourself – having grown old – one candlelit evening, watching "The Child and the Night" together with your grandchildren and proudly declaring: "I was there!"
From the Webmagazine "Toute la culture"

The first two public performances took place on
Sunday, October 31 and on Sunday, November 7, 2010
both at 5:00pm at the Theater of Vevey (Switzerland).

"The Child and the Night" describes the heroic journey of the boy Virgile through the night.
He overcomes his fear of darkness and victoriously passes through the night with all of its adventures in order to bring back the light of day as promised to his little sister.
But first, Virgile must challenge Queen Noctilia, the Hunter of Dreams Mister W. and the sinister clown Yorrick.
This crossing through the night is an ode to our imaginary powers as well as to life itself.

With six soloists, four instrumentalists and a children's chorus, this lyrical tale allows the audience to confront the universe of the night in a positive spirit and – at the same time – to discover the world of opera and various musical styles. Conceived for young people and including their participation, each performance will be preceded by two workshops which will help audiences to enter with ease the universe of this tale and its accompanying music.

Die ersten zwei oeffentlichen Vorstellungen fanden am
Sonntag, 31. Oktober und am Sonntag, 7. November 2010

Andreas Jaeggi comments on three statements made by Nathalie Grob from the editorial staff.

Basler Zeitung: LifeStyle 28. Juli 2009
Andreas Jaeggi erwidert drei Behauptungen von Nathalie Grob (Redaktion BaZ).

Nathalie Grob: "The last opera performance you have seen is Vivaldi's 'Orlando furioso' at the Basel Theater."
Andreas Jaeggi: "Correct. My event sponsor, Trafina Private Bank from Basel, invited me and my 'registered partner' Ron Rubey to the opening night. As I am usually singing onstage myself and this is quite sufficient for me as far as la-la-la goes, here therefore is my musical CD tip: Bach's & Mozart's Concertos for Two Pianos with Clara Haskil (EMI)."

Nathalie Grob: "Als letzte Oper haben Sie 'Orlando furioso' am Theater Basel gesehen."
Andreas Jaeggi: "Richtig.

NG: "You practise evey day at the piano."
AJ: "Also correct, as singing without a microphone is a high competiton sport, demanding uninterrupted muscle training. So, every day, I sit at my electronic Yamaha piano (which is never out of tune) from the Music Hug store in Basel."

NG: "You only paint with oil colors."
AJ: "Almost correct, as I do prefer to work with this slow drying and correctable medium of expression and the top layer of my paintings – might it be a city impression, a nude, a portrait or a still life – is always executed in oil paint. I do not mix my own colors, leaving that to the professionals: some very specific hues can only be found at Sennelier's, but I prefer dog common studio tubes from Lucas because a too exclusive working material makes me nervous."

After the production of "Juliette ou La Clef des songes" by Bohuslav Martinu at the National Opera of Paris / Bastille (France) in February 2006, Andreas Jaeggi interprets once more the roles of the Police Inspector, the Postman and the Clerk of the Central Office for Dreams, this time in London. Maestro Jiri Belohlavek will conduct this "Book of Dreams" at Barbican Hall with the BBC Symphony Orchestra on March 27, 2009. This staged (by Kenneth Richardson) live concert performance will also be recorded.

"
This was the most distinguished opera performance yet of the season: superbly conducted, strongly and sensitively cast, very beautifully played, excellently sung and enacted in a 'concert staging' by Kenneth Richardson with skillful lighting and the simplest of moves to suggest the scenes and the deam-action without excrescences, interventions or contradictions. Opera at its best ... Not the least reward of the remarkable show was the increasingly rare pleasure of attending an opera at which everyone's words were clear and telling ... Neither of them [William Burden and Magdalena Kozena] was scorebound – dramatic death in concert performances. Nor was anyone else. In the numerous, doubled or trebled small roles, Andreas Jaeggi was outstanding for his clear words ... Balance in the clear Barbican acoustics was ideal. A great evening."

I was hardly expecting to find singers of the calibre of Roderick Williams - probably our best kept secret, a truly first-rate baritone, gorgeous voice, lovely personality, fine actor - and Rosalind Plowright in smaller roles or discovering quite so late in his career - twenty-plus years already - that the Swiss have produced another Hugues Cuenod in the shape of Andreas Jaeggi, a powerful character tenor with the sort of Mime-type voice that would blow most current Siegfrieds off the stage, and who had an absolute field-day as the Police Inspector, the Postman (who doesn't remember having been the Police Inspector) and the Clerk in the Ministry of Dreams.

There were vivid characterisations from the likes of Rosalind Plowright (Bird-Seller and Fortune-Teller), Jean Rigby (Fish-Seller and Grandmother) and Roderick Williams (Man in the Window, Memory-Seller, etc.). In particular, Swiss tenor Andreas Jaeggi played his roles of Inspector and Dream Clerk to the utmost.

Credit must go to the small cast of performers some playing multiple roles in the opera. In opera there’s a judgement to be made on acting as well as singing ability and in this performance it was very difficult to find fault with either in anyone’s contribution. Aside from the glossy perfection of Magdalene Kozena’s Juliette and William Burden’s effortless Michel, Andreas Jaeggi’s postman, clerk and police chief were hugely entertaining.

There were colourful contributions from Roderick Williams, Rosalind Plowright, Jean Rigby and especially Andreas Jaeggi, playing a succession of hilariously pedantic minor officials.

Ron Rubey: "Among the highlights of 2007 were Andreas' 30 performances with the Parisian contemporary musical theatre ensemble Company Alain Germain, with whom Andreas has worked for some 30 years now (!). The production, entitled "The 400 Beats of Saint-Louis", was commissioned for the 400th Anniversary Celebration of the Saint-Louis Hospital of Paris (the biggest and oldest hospital in Paris). It was a musical theatre piece with the singers, actors and musicians crossing disciplines: Andreas sang, acted, played the flute and portrayed numerous characters. The "piece-de-resistance" of the evening was Andreas in a lengthy, demanding solo where he played an eccentric, demented Grande Dame who struggles with her fate of decent into Alzheimers and ultimately confronting the further torment of cancer finally collapses at the end of the scene pulling off her fright-wig to reveal a bald head, the result of chemotherapy. The Grande Dame then leaves the stage slowly and magnifciently, head held high in a powerful ode to the strength, courage and diginity inherent in human nature."

Pierre Vavasseur: "... All the actors and singers are stunning. There was an avalanche of applause for the tenor Andreas Jaeggi, who as La Diva delivers an unforgettable potpourri of grand opera arias. Hurry, hurry, you have only four days left to discover this hidden jewel."
"Le Parisien" Newspaper: October 24, 2007

Pierre Vavasseur: " ...
Oktober 2007

Sophie de Segur: "I found the production sensational, so amusing, full of life, rythmical, intelligent, original! Ah really, Alain and all of you are formidable. You, Andreas, have stunned and moved me tremendously. An awful lot of talent, audacity and professional experience are needed to play so close to the edge (that fine line between acting and being) and always remain true, touching, never ridiculous, infinitely musical and noble. A big, big bravo and an immense Thank You."
